Hidradenitis suppurativa is a chronic skin condition featuring lumps in places such as the armpits or groin.
The signs and symptoms of hidradenitis suppurativa include lumps under the skin that are painful, and usually form where your skin rubs together, such as the armpits, groin, buttocks and breasts. Some people may inititally think that the lump is a boil. Many times there are blackheads that appear in small pitted areas of skin, and some bumps or sores get bigger, break open and drain pus with an odor.
Over time, tunnels might form under the skin, connecting the lumps. These wounds are painful and heal very slowly, if at all, and drain blood and pus.
There are various treatments available, but new treatments are needed. We have conducted multiple studies testing potential treatments for this condition.
